FLEXOGRAPHIC "FLEXO" LABEL PRINTING

DIGITAL LABEL PRINTING AND FINISHING

Flexographic printing is a traditional print technology developed in the early 1900's that uses flexible plates and semi liquid inks.  Since 1990, great advances have been made to the quality of flexographic printing presses, printing plates and inks.

Digital printing is a cutting-edge technology that produces high quality labels on a variety of materials and does not require any printing plates or tooling (dies).  Digital printing is best suited for shorter runs, labels with multiple versions and labels with variable information.

  • No printing plates are required
  • No die (tooling) is required - in-line laser diecutting
  • Very high print quality
  • Minimal set-up time
  • Minimal material waste during set-up and version changes
  • Ideally suited for short runs or projects with multiple versions
  • Can print variable information
  • High press speeds, typically 200 - 300 feet per minute
  • Ability to print on wide variety of materials
  • Ease of printing and matching exact PMS spot colors and 4-color process
  • Lower cost of consumables
  • All printing and converting process are done in-line
  • Ideally suited for large runs

DISADVANTAGES OF FLEXO PRINTING

  • High cost of printing plates
  • High cost of set-up (material waste)
  • Significant amount of time required to set-up multiple color jobs
  • Version changes require time and generate waste
  • Very slow press speeds in comparison to flexo presses
  • High cost of label materials and inks
  • Colors are limited to colors made of CMYK - matching spot colors can be difficult
  • Substrates are limited to ink compatibility and heat
